LANDSCAPE APPROACH
Less water.
A distinct garden.
The Utah residential garden explores a water-wise landscape with manageable maintenance around retained trees. Routes, planting groups and mineral surfaces work together to establish the character of the garden through its drawings.
DESIGN DECISIONS
Existing trees.
A new order.
Mature trees provide the starting point for the layout. Planting areas and routes are considered alongside movement around the house, balancing open surfaces with denser planting groups.
Retain
Start with the existing trees.
Move
Keep walking routes clear and legible.
Texture
Consider planting groups and mineral ground together.
PLAN AND DETAIL
Plant codes.
Spatial roles.
Festuca ovina and Eriocoma hymenoides provide finer textures; Yucca filamentosa introduces a distinct form; Mahonia fremontii and Atriplex canescens contribute shrub structure. The coded schedule connects these selections with their positions in the plan.
